Patterned
Prints & Patterns
Say patterned carpets to many and they think of garish florals or highly detailed twists and knots. Patterned carpet has come along way since those early axminsters. Carpet manufacturers are now seeing a return to patterned carpets within the home, thanks to designers such as Cath Kidston and Laura Ashley, but with an altogether more subtle attitude.
Patterned carpets differ from region to region. Many in the north prefer more traditional styles in bolder tones while the south is one for beige, beige and more beige.
More traditional style 'Prints' are made from 80% wool with a mixture of other fibres such as Nylon or Polypropylene. Originating from Axminster Carpets they are woven backed and have the ability to retain their looks much longer than a plain or heathered twist pile equivilant.
However the price of the more 'Traditional' patterned carpets because of their design and process in manufacturing are quite expensive and there are many cheaper alternatives such as 'Wilton' carpets (not to be confused with the company), which are woven backed, but are made from Polypropylene.
Wilton
This brings us to our range of Nylon based prints. Nylon is more acceptable to traffic than Polypropylene, but where Polyprop carpets excell in stain removal properties, 100% Nylon carpets do not, hence the price of good Nylon products have soared in recent years.
Nylon is a dyed fibre and has to go through many vigourous processes to acheive its looks and feel. To help with stain protection most 'top end' Nylon products are treated, or have been engineered to help with light spills and minor stains, however the general misconception surrounding the Stain Protection (ie Scotchgard etc;) used on these carpets has given the consumer a belief that the carpet is resististant to all types of stains, when in fact it is not.
A lot of work has gone into Nylon products these days to help bring the quality of Nylon back to the consumer and if you are looking for a carpet that will keep its appearance (ie; flattening of the pile) a little longer, then Nylon is the fibre to choose. However like Polypropylene, cheaper nylon products would not be suitable for more heavy traffic areas.
